The Kochtopus

This is only a partial list of the government hating organizations and interests founded by Kochs and which Koch money funds:

  • Cato Institute, alleged to be the pivot for all the others

  • Reason Foundation, home of "Reason" Magazine, whose editor Radley Balko recently launched a Greewaldian broadside of his own against Katrina vanden Heuvel and The Nation for not abasing themselves sufficiently before him and all OUTRAGED!!!! (and suffering) Libertarians for their disgraceful publication of the Ames/Levine smear of poor, simple John Tyner, yadda yadda, whaa whaa

  • Property and Environment Research Center -- whut the...?

  • Students for a Libertarian Society -- Ah, the Students, must have the Students, does anybody remember the SDS? I do.

  • The Libertarian Review -- turgid

  • Institute for Humane Studies -- of what? Extermination of the Species?

  • Council for a Competitive Economy -- competition is always good for the winners

  • Heritage Foundation -- yes. Well. Obvious, eh?

  • Federalist Society -- Nino! My Man! Following the lead of this Scalia reprobate is what put us in this mess. So what should we do? Put more Federalists on the Bench. YAY!

  • Mercatus Center at George Mason University -- ah yes, graybeards at academe. So important for the long haul. Must compete with Chomsky. Must.

From the Wikibin article on the Kochtopus:

The power structure of the Kocktopus changed over the years, from being simply Charles Koch and his aide George Pearson, to a setup in which Libertarian Party national chairman Ed Crane was equal in power to Pearson. In addition
to rumblings about the "Crane Machine" and the "Kochtopus," there was a deep suspicion that Crane was selling out the party's principles. Circa 1984, Richie Fink set up a lobbying outfit called Citizens for a Sound Economy as a means of furthering Koch's goal of bringing in outside funding through a membership organization; this heralded the beginning of the Finktopus. The term "Kochtopus" was coined in February 1978 by Samuel Edward Konkin, III, who accused Koch of attempting "to buy the major Libertarian institutions - not just the Party - and run the movement as other plutocrats run all the other political parties in capitalist states."

Who would ever have imagined that plutocrats would actually buy an entire political party and absorb its essence (impurify precious bodily fluids, don't you see), while creating and funding a whole other infrastructure? Imagine! Hm.

Further, and this story is right out of the Struggles and Purges in the Soviet Union back in the day:

The Kochtopus is allied against the anarcho-capitalist Ludwig von Mises Institute. Murray Rothbard warned of the dangers of putting too much power in the hands of one donor, and accused the Kochtopus of causing a "Kochcycle" by pouring millions into the libertarian movement from 1977-1980, and then imploding the movement by a sudden contraction of funding. Specifically, the Kochtopus took control of the Libertarian Party at the 1979 Libertarian National Convention in Los Angeles, at which David H. Koch, Charles' brother, openly bought the vice presidential nomination for $500,000; campaign finance laws allowed him to spend unlimited amounts for his own candidacy. Murray Rothbard broke with the Kochtopus soon after the '79 LP Convention and most of his close allies were purged, including Williamson Evers of Inquiry. The Center for Libertarian Studies was cut off from Koch funding. Rothbard's The Libertarian Forum began attacking Koch, and Rothbard and young Justin Raimondo set up a new Libertarian Radical Caucus.

Yes, well. Raimundo at least has changed his tune. To wit:

    In Defense of the Kochtopus

The Koch empire versus the American empire

I won't quote anything from it as it is mostly just a tiresome screed against Jane Mayer's "hit job" -- or is it a "smear job?" One loses track of the correct terminology -- in the New Yorker which will be cited later. If you want to read Raimondo's tiresome screed introspective examination of his wild youth, by all means have at it.
